About the photograph

Lisa took this photograph in September 2005 at the Chengdu Panda Research Centre, Sichuan. Lisa had returned to China with her family to celebrate the second anniversary of their daughter's adoption.

The Panda Research Centre is on the outskirts of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The centre houses many pandas and is an active panda breeding centre. Lisa's family were even able to view a female and her 2 day old baby through a nursery window.

As Lisa explains:

'We had to visit the Research Centre early in the morning - the pandas like to eat their breakfast and then sleep for the rest of the day. They are definitely more active in the mornings.

Even though it was very hot later in the day, the morning was cool and misty and it gave the whole centre a really mystical feeling - it was lovely.

It was an amazing experience so many pandas in one place - I have seen pandas before in a zoo setting although never so many in one place. And here we were so close to them. Most of the enclosures were quite large and naturally landscaped.

The two pandas in the photograph were 'teenagers' and there were two other pandas in this large enclosure with them.

But I was drawn to these two with the beautiful stand of bamboo behind them. They looked like they were sitting down having a little chat over their breakfast."
